If you are looking for amazing views and scenery look no further than Alum Cave Trail. This is one of the most popular trails in The Great Smoky Mountains. Round trip this hike is about 11 miles, will take approximately 8 hours to complete and is rated moderately difficult.
At about 1.3 miles in you will come upon the first prominent landmark, Arch Rock. This arch was formed by natural erosion and you will pass directly under it on a set of stone stairs. Just beyond Arch Rock you will find Inspiration Point. At 4700 ft elevation you will be able to take in panoramic mountain views.
Alum Cave Bluff marks the trail’s half way point. The concave overhand towers at about 80ft and is a popular resting point for many. You can even use this as a turn around point if you are looking for a shorter trip.
The second half of the trail travels toward Mt LeConte and is a bit more challenging, gaining 1000ft in elevation.
Clingmans Dome takes you to the highest point in Tennessee where you can enjoy 360 degree views of The Great Smoky Mountains. This paved trail is only about 1.3 miles but with a climb gradient of 13% this hike can be a little steep. Don’t worry though - there are several benches along the trail if you need to take a break. This trail is definitely worth the climb. On a clear day you can see up to 100 miles. Just remember to take your jacket as the peak of this trail can be up to 20 degrees cooler than the air below.
After checking out Clingmans Dome while not go ahead and hike Andrews Bald which can be accessed right from the Clingmans Dome parking lot. High elevation grassy meadows in the Southern Appalachian Mountains are known as balds. Andrews Bald has the distinction of being the highest bald in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 1.7 miles you will reach this grassy meadow with amazing views. Be sure to pack your lunch as this is the perfect picnic spot.
Charlies Bunion is a unique overlook. This 8 mile trail is part of the famous Appalachian Trail and is more of a strenuous hike. From Charlies Bunion you will see spectacular views of Mt. Kephart and Mount Guyot. If you are traveling this trail during the spring you will be met with an abundance of beautiful wildflowers blooming.
Don’t let the shorter distance of this trail fool you. This 4 mile round trip hike provides breathtaking views. You will also cross several bridges which go over different streams, tributaries and beautiful cascades.
